How ISO 45001:2018 Certification Strengthened Our Supply Chain (And Why It Matters for Your Project)

When A&F Building Group achieved ISO 45001:2018 certification, we faced a crucial question: Does this standard apply only to our internal operations, or should it extend to our entire supply chain?

We chose the harder path. We decided that every supplier, every subcontractor, every partner in our network should be evaluated through the same rigorous safety and quality lens.

Why Most Companies Don’t Do This

Supplier vetting takes time. It costs money. And honestly, most GCs and specialty contractors don’t have formal supplier evaluation processes. They work with companies they know, bid jobs competitively, and manage problems as they arise.

It’s simpler. It’s not better.

What ISO 45001:2018 Demanded of Us

ISO 45001 requires organizations to identify and manage hazards across their entire operation—including the supply chain. The logic is straightforward: if you’re serious about protecting workers and ensuring project quality, you need to know that every company you partner with shares that commitment.

For A&F, that meant building a formal supplier evaluation process.

Our New Procurement Standards

Every potential supplier or subcontractor now goes through a structured assessment:

1. Safety Systems Documentation

• Do they have a documented safety management system? (Formal procedures, training protocols, incident tracking)
• Is it aligned with recognized standards (ISO 45001, OHSAS 18001, or equivalent)?
• Can they demonstrate continuous improvement in safety?

2. Safety Performance History

• Incident rates (lost-time injuries, near-misses)
• Regulatory compliance record
• Third-party audit results, if available
• References from other GCs about their on-site behavior

3. Quality and Precision Standards

• Delivery reliability (do they meet schedules consistently?)
• Quality control processes (how do they catch errors before shipping?)
• Flexibility (can they adapt when site conditions change?)
• Communication (are they responsive to coordination needs?)

4. Cultural Fit

• Do they value the same things we do? (Safety, precision, partnership, continuous improvement)
• Are they professional in their interactions with GCs and other trades?
• Do they understand the unique demands of working in occupied facilities or complex commercial environments?

5. Operational Alignment

• Can their work procedures integrate with our project-specific requirements?
• Are they willing to participate in pre-construction coordination?
• Do they understand the GC’s role in managing the project, and do they support that?

Real Example: Why This Matters

We recently evaluated two suppliers for a high-precision glazing project:

Option A: Lower cost, faster delivery, proven technical capability.

• Safety record: Average incident rate, basic documentation, limited improvement initiatives
• Quality systems: Good, but reactive (catch problems after they ship)
• Communication: Responsive to urgent requests, but not proactive

Option B: Slightly higher cost, standard lead time, proven technical capability.

• Safety record: Low incident rate, comprehensive documentation, demonstrates continuous improvement
• Quality systems: Proactive inspection protocols, redundant QC checks
• Communication: Proactive coordination, anticipates GC needs, participates in problem-solving

We chose Option B.

Why? Because the slightly higher cost and standard timeline were more than offset by reduced rework risk, better coordination, and a partner who cared about the same outcomes we did.

When A&F specifies suppliers and subcontractors that meet rigorous safety and quality standards, we’re protecting the GC’s interests:

• Better quality — Proactive QC catches problems before they reach the site
• Easier coordination — Partners who understand project complexity can adapt when conditions change
• Lower risk — Safety-conscious suppliers reduce the likelihood of incidents that derail projects
• Professional delivery — Partners who communicate proactively prevent mid-project chaos

The Broader Shift

ISO 45001:2018 certification forced us to ask: “Who do we want to be as a company?”

The answer was clear: A company that’s intentional about partnerships. That prioritizes safety and quality over cost-cutting. That understands that the cheapest option often costs the most downstream.

This mindset extends to how we work with GCs. We’re not just a glazing/demountable wall supplier who ships products on time. We’re a partner who helps manage the complexity of modern commercial construction.
